Tips on Roundtable Kondangan or Attending Wedding Parties in Lasem

Guys, if you happen to be in Lasem or Rembang and chance upon attending a wedding party or a feast for any occasions in Rembang and Lasem, you might want to take notes on the following.

Usually the parties are held in large halls. You will find round tables that can accommodate 8 to 10 people for each.

  1. The feast will usually be started with appetizers that involve kudapan (snacks), such as beans and soft drinks.
  2. Several other appetizers will then be served, which include two pieces of risoles, or small croquettes with chicken meat and vegetables fillings.
  3. Soup is brought onto the table after the appetizers. Sup gelatin (a soup containing chicken meat, beef, and macaroni) is common in such a feast.
  4. The main dishes are mixed rice or yellow rice. The side dishes are arranged around the plates, usually containing potato chips, chicken stew with aromatic coconut gravy, fried chili sauce, and a splash of savory chicken stew broth. Sometimes you can also find chili sauce. Yummy!
  5. After you’re finished eating the main dishes, desserts will be served for you, which usually include Es Puding (ice cream coupled with jelly and fruits) and Es Puter (Indonesian traditional ice cream).

Considering the location and the amount of food served, you should remember the following tips when going to a roundtable feast:

  1. Come on time. If you don’t, chances that they run out of food are big!
  2. If you’re attending a wedding party, bring with you a ‘cash gift.’ If you are uncertain about the appropriate amount to give, ask your (Indonesian) friends for suggestions.
  3. Make sure you come with an empty stomach.
  4. Choose a strategic place for seating. Sit near the entertainment stage so that you can watch the various performances while enjoying your dinner.

Enjoy the roundtable feast or wedding party!
